Tips for Incorporating Sustainable Materials in the Workspace

In today’s world, it’s essential to integrate eco-friendly practices into every aspect of life, including the workspace. An eco-friendly workspace not only helps reduce the carbon footprint but also promotes a healthier and more productive work environment.

One way to achieve this is by incorporating sustainable materials into the workspace. This article provides tips for incorporating eco-friendly materials into your workspace.

1. Use Recycled Materials

Using recycled materials is an easy and effective way to reduce the carbon footprint of your workspace. Recycled materials can be used for various purposes, such as furniture, flooring, and wall coverings.

For example, instead of buying brand-new furniture, consider purchasing furniture made from recycled materials. Additionally, recycled paper can be used for printing and writing, reducing the need for new paper.

2. Choose Sustainable Wood

If you need to buy new furniture for your workspace, choose sustainable wood. Sustainable wood is harvested in an environmentally friendly way, ensuring that the forests remain intact. Look for furniture made from wood that has been certified by organisations such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

3. Opt for Energy-Efficient Lighting

Lighting is an essential aspect of any workspace. However, traditional lighting systems consume a lot of energy, which contributes to the carbon footprint. To reduce energy consumption, consider using energy-efficient lighting systems such as LED bulbs.

LED bulbs consume up to 80% less energy compared to traditional bulbs and last longer, reducing the need for replacements.

4. Choose Low VOC Paint

Paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to indoor air pollution. When shopping for paint, choose low-VOC paint, which emits fewer harmful chemicals. Low VOC paint is available in a wide range of colours and finishes, making it easy to find a paint that suits your workspace’s style.

5. Use Natural or Recyclable Flooring

Instead of using traditional flooring materials such as carpet or vinyl, consider using natural or recyclable flooring materials. For instance, cork flooring is made from the bark of the cork oak tree and is a sustainably harvested material. Additionally, carpet tiles made from recycled materials can be used, reducing the need for new materials.

6. Opt for Energy-Efficient Equipment

In addition to lighting, other equipment used in the workspace can consume a lot of energy. To reduce energy consumption, choose energy-efficient equipment such as computers, printers, and copiers. Energy Star-certified equipment is designed to consume less energy while still providing the same level of performance.

7. Choose Sustainable Fabrics

Fabrics used in the workspace, such as curtains and upholstery, can also be made from sustainable materials. Look for fabrics made from organic cotton, linen, or hemp. Additionally, fabrics made from recycled materials can also be used, reducing the need for new materials.

8. Recycle and Compost

Recycling and composting help to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, reducing the carbon footprint. Provide recycling bins and composting bins throughout the workspace, making it easy for employees to dispose of waste properly.

Conclusion

Incorporating eco-friendly materials into the workspace is not only good for the environment, but it also promotes a healthier and more productive work environment.

Using recycled materials, choosing sustainable wood, opting for energy-efficient lighting and equipment, using low VOC paint, choosing natural or recyclable flooring, using sustainable fabrics, and recycling and composting are all effective ways to make your workspace eco-friendly.

By implementing these tips, you can reduce your workspace’s carbon footprint and promote a more sustainable future.

The Importance of Lighting in the Workplace

Lighting is incredibly important in office spaces. Take a midday walk on a sunny workday and you’ll experience first-hand how lighting can affect your mood and productivity. While ambient lighting can influence the atmosphere and affect mood, task lighting is essential to ensure employees are always working safely and comfortably without straining their eyes.

In fact, a full one-third of workers would be happier at work if they had better lighting in the office, (Staples Survey 2018).  Finding the best office lighting has, with good reason, become a top priority for design teams and office managers.  Recent trends include pendant lighting in kitchen and canteen areas, circular lighting in meeting spaces and the industrial look remains on-trend and timeless because of its versatility.

Also, energy efficient lighting has become increasingly important, setting up motion-sensored lights in areas that are used periodically, like bathrooms, basements, and supply closets. Putting lights on a timer and  installing dimmers allows you to turn down the lights when your work doesn’t require maximum brightness.

Vintage lightbulbs give off a warm glow and bring a sense of retro character to a space, brilliant for modern offices looking to create a unique, charming design that is still functional

The industrial look remains on-trend and timeless because of its versatility. While the industrial aesthetic can be sleek, refined and professional, it can also be a playful style that indulges creativity and personality – perfect for the demands of a modern office!

Why Anchorpoint office design delves deeper to get results

Office interiors

As a leading specialist  in corporate and commercial workplace design and build, our clients might expect us to start pulling out colour charts and furniture examples as a first step.

But the Anchor Interiors design process goes far deeper than that. We have a four-step process that takes you from initial feasibility and design through to completed project.

Step one of the Anchorpoint Interiors design process

The first step alone includes a site survey and information gathering process, along with a client brief. We work with our clients to develop the brief as it becomes clearer what they need as the process continues. Step one will also include a concept design, project programme  and of course an outline cost.

Any design begins with looking at the very heart of the business. We find out how the business runs, what its vision is, what happens in the workspace, and any future plans.

This enables us to conduct a design and feasibility study, so that we can create an office space that really works for you and your employees, increasing productivity, encouraging collaboration – even improving staff engagement and retention.

Our aim: to create an office space that your employees look forward to spending time in. This is important because it’s estimated that disengaged workers can cost their employers anywhere between £3,400 and £10,000 in wasted salary each year. Your new office should also be able to grow and transform with your business, and offer your team opportunities to work in the most creative and productive ways.

During the design and feasibility process we will consider:

  • Numbers of staff: this includes staff who work full time in the office, those who come into the office part time, and those who work remotely.
  • What happens or will happen within your office: do you need breakout areas and collaborative areas for brainstorming and spontaneous meetings? Perhaps your team needs meeting rooms with teleconferencing facilities, or flexi areas or hot desking facilities for workers who do not spend all their time in the office.
  • The psychology of how you use your space: this can affect the flow through the office, where you might place social areas, storage, partitions and breakout areas.
  • Your business identity: If your office welcomes a number of  visitors and clients, it will also need to convey your business identity and vision.
  • How much space you need: once we have completed our site survey and information gathering process, our expert team can calculate just how much space you need.
  • How your business might change: we can make the office space flexible enough to suit your growing needs, whether that means more employees or a pivot in the activity that takes place in the workplace.
  • Use of light: making the most of available light will have a positive effect on anyone working within the office. Our expert designers know how to maximise its effect within a workspace.
  • Rules and regulations: whether they are regulations related to suitable working environments, or specific guidance related to returning to the office during the pandemic, our experienced team will ensure they are adhered to within the project.
  • Your budget: we can help you make a business case for the outlay of an office design, and work with you to make the most of the available budget.

While there are many factors to consider when planning an office transformation, Anchorpoint Interiors has more than 21 years of experience in corporate workplace design and build. Our team of experts can guide and advise you to create an office that not only looks great but will also prove to be a productive workplace for you and your employees.
